You must always show up mentally and physically. (insight into human behavior)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The industry is no longer separate departments.  The new system focuses on integration, because we must realize that everyone is "a creative." The contest is open to all current MTSU students, and we’re eliciting original logo designs and/or slogans.  All entries will be considered by the Writing Center administration, and the winning design will become the official Logo of the Margaret H. Ordoubadian University Writing Center—a great way for someone to leave their mark on MTSU!  Obviously, we’re looking for fresh, creative, and dramatically appropriate material—no umbrellas, quill pens, light bulbs, or sheep, please. We took another 5 minutes break midway through the meeting and we challenged everyone to find out more about someone they didn't know very well. Someone asked me what Linked In was tonight.  Oh dear students of advertising, if you don't know, you will surely find out!  Here's a hint:  80% of employers use Linked In the hiring process.    One great thing about this resume workshop is that it's happening a week before the MTSU Career Fair. We'll let you know more details soon! :)&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Meetings will be held in Comm 228 (the classroom where Ad Mgmt and Copywriting are held).&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;September 15th, 2009.  6 p.m.  -  Informational/Social meeting.  We'll discuss where ad club has been, where it's going, and our newest ad club addition - de la Blue, a student agency.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;September 30th, 2009.  6 p.m. -  "Advertise Yourself!" resume builder meeting.  Nancy Stubblefield, the Mass Comm career coordinator, will speak on resumes and MTSU resources to help you better your chances of finding a job.     This meeting is going to be incredibly valuable for anyone planning on attending the October 7th Career Fair on campus.  &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;October 13th, 2009.  6 p.m. - Speaker and topic to be determined.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;October 26th, 2009. - This will be ad club's first social!  We'll be celebrating Halloween and getting to know each other better at an off-campus location.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;November 10th, 2009. 6 p.m. - Tentatively panel night. (Might flip flop with following meeting.)  For those of you who came to the BOHAN panel last year, you know how valuable it was to hear a team of advertising professionals discuss their individual roles in a campaign. We'd like to hear about another campaign experience again this year. Agency to be determined.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;November 24th, 2009.  6 p.m. - Speaker and topic to be determined.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;December 2nd, 2009.  6 p.m. - Presentation night.  While details are still being worked out, one thing we know for sure is that de la Blue will be taking an active role in creating advertising materials this semester.  This night will be de la Blue's chance to show off their hard work to other ad club members and faculty.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;So mark your calendars, because we're expecting a phenomenal semester and we want you to be a part of it! Do you really understand what all the Tweeting is about on Twitter? Still get your news just from the traditional sources?&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Now more than ever, students leaving college will be asked to know not just how to use forms of social media, but also how to use them effectively to promote companies, products, brands etc. JOUR 4800 Advertising and Social Media hopes to help you determine the effective uses for advertisers and public relations practitioners of a variety of networking sites ranging from Facebook (there really is more to it than adding friends and posting party pictures) to Second Life (want to be a rock star? give it a try in Second Life). We'll be mixing hands-on projects with theoretical backgrounds to give you a chance to discover what social media can do for businesses.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The course will substitute for a professional topics course in the advertising and public relations curriculum. More work, more play, and more of everything in between.  Making every task simpler and every day easier.&lt;/span&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Calibri;font-size:100%;"&gt;&lt;b&gt;WHO?&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Calibri;font-size:100%;"&gt;We need outstanding student leaders across the country to help us introduce Windows 7 to their peers.  Specifically we are looking for students who…&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;ul type="DISC"&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Calibri;font-size:100%;"&gt;Have the respect of their peer group&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Calibri;font-size:100%;"&gt;Are recognized as leaders.  They get involved in organizations to lead and influence, not just build their resume&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Calibri;font-size:100%;"&gt;Are tech-savvy and excited about new technology&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Calibri;font-size:100%;"&gt;Are experienced Windows and Microsoft Office users&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Calibri;font-size:100%;"&gt;Are connected to peers, both electronically through social networks and on-campus through involvement in clubs and organizations&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Calibri;font-size:100%;"&gt;Are “doers.” They’re the ones you trust when something needs to get done.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Calibri;font-size:100%;"&gt;&lt;b&gt;What’s required of a Microsoft Windows 7 campus rep?&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Calibri;font-size:100%;"&gt;Reps will receive everything they need to do the job including a Windows laptop computer.  They will be asked to share an online demonstration of Windows 7 with their peers.  Specifically they will:&lt;/span&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;ul type="DISC"&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Calibri;font-size:100%;"&gt;Promote Windows 7 in different ways each week, following a week-by-week calendar provided by Microsoft.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Calibri;font-size:100%;"&gt;Organize opportunities for students to view the capabilities of Windows 7.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Calibri;font-size:100%;"&gt;Using Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and other means of social networking, promote the product to friends, post web banners and set up online event invitations for demonstrations.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Calibri;font-size:100%;"&gt;Post detailed results to our portal in a timely manner.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Calibri;font-size:100%;"&gt;Communicate with our account manager on any problems, challenges or ideas.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Calibri; PF has a 20 year history with the agency. Everyone at the panel has worked on this campaign.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Step one:  &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Brand Engagement process&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;Think about client needs and what the agency can offer as a solution.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Research your brand and TA.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;The Brand Engagement specialist forms a Brand Brief.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;The AE writes the Brand Brief and communicates it to all team members.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Think about Brand Issues. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;PF Ex:  current economy, increasing competition, nearby competition&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Create the Brand’s position&lt;/span&gt;:  PF – The Center of Fun in the Smoky Mountains&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Internal exercises to get inspired for your brand:  &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;Create a list of words describing your brand.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Form a Brand story.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Your list of words can contribute to your ad copy later&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Form a Brand Strategy&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Name your Target Audience&lt;br /&gt;Create a Channel Strategy:  When are you going to reach your target audience?&lt;br /&gt;Creative Strategy&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Media Process&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;Brand engagement,  research&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;What channels and cost&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Work with client and get approval&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Buy air time or ad space&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Maintain your buying relationships&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Report what actually happened &lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you can think of a way to reach your TA, you can find a company who can help you do it.  Can get pricey.  Watch your budget.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Media and Creative work closely.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Creative process:&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;Go outside your team; get a fresh set of eyes&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Initial concepts – ideas&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Creative Director narrows down ideas&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;AE gives feedback.  AE must know how client will respond.  Be totally in tune w/ client needs.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Present in-house to agency President&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Political issues:  Clients think about “Who’s going to yell at me?”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Copywriting&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;Be prepared to deal w/ a lot of revisions&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Be prepared to deal w/ clients who think they’re writers – common occurrence&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Pick your battles. Educates, communicates, better consumer decisions, better products&lt;br /&gt;     b. For Advertising to work, you must know 2 things.&lt;br /&gt;         i. Who you’re talking to&lt;br /&gt;        ii. What your purpose is&lt;br /&gt;            1. Sell&lt;br /&gt;            2. Branding&lt;br /&gt;            3. Talking to themselves (shareholders, corporate culture)&lt;br /&gt;            4. Respond to competition&lt;br /&gt;            5. Education (create a need)&lt;br /&gt;     c. For Advertising to work, the tumblers must fall into place.&lt;br /&gt;         i. Economy&lt;br /&gt;        ii. Competition&lt;br /&gt;       iii. Product quality&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;2) Advertising is collaborative.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;     a. If you have a great idea, know that it will be fiddled with.&lt;br /&gt;     b. While some fiddling is necessary and makes the idea better, too much can ruin the great        idea.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;3) Advertising is NOT subjective.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;     a. There are things that work and don’t work. &lt;br /&gt;     b. Studies are done to help you know what works and what doesn’t.  Some of it is learnt by experience.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;4) Getting a Job in Advertising&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;     a. Don’t go to an agency without knowing what position you want.&lt;br /&gt;     b. Build a portfolio.&lt;br /&gt;         i. Be willing to spend money to make your portfolio great.&lt;br /&gt;        ii. Including marketing plans, graphics, press releases, etc related to the job you want to do.   Even if you want to be an Account Executive, a portfolio is necessary.&lt;br /&gt;      iii. Online portfolios are also a good way to differentiate yourself.&lt;br /&gt;     c. Work for a  larger agency sometime during your career.  Large agencies impress smaller agencies.&lt;br /&gt;         i. This may mean you have to go where they are.&lt;br /&gt;        ii. Think of your advertising career like the military. You might have to put in a couple years in a big city with big agencies before getting a job in the market you want (such as the small market in Nashville).&lt;br /&gt;    d. Redbook&lt;br /&gt;         i. Directory of agencies&lt;br /&gt;        ii. Where they are, billings, management, accounts&lt;br /&gt;       iii. Expensive, but if you have access to one, best source out there.&lt;br /&gt;    e. When you change jobs, reward yourself.&lt;br /&gt;         i. It’s okay to ask for more money than your last position if you’ve paid your dues and you’re worth it.&lt;br /&gt;       ii.
